Medical Coverage of Red Lake Emergency Care - EmCare, a national physician staffing agency, provides 24-hour coverage of Emergency Care. The Red Lake Comprehensive Health Services (Tribal) has the contract with EmCare. EmCare physicians travel from different regions of the United States and spend anywhere from 2 days to two week intervals.

• Shifts are 12 hours to 14 hours
• Two physicians are staffed during the daytime, evening and early morning hours
• One physician is staffed to provide coverage from 2:00AM-8:00AM.
• On occasions a Nurse Practitioner will be in Emergency Care to assist the physicians in seeing patients

Red Lake Emergency Care average number of visits 2011:

• 60-100 patient visits per day
• 2200 patient visits per month
• 30,000 patient visits per year

Red Lake Emergency Care Staff:  Emergency Care staffs 14 positions. These positions include:

• One Nurse Manager
• 8 Registered Nurses (RN)
• Two Medical Support Assistants
• Two Nursing Assistants-Registered
• One evening on-site pharmacist; Monday –Friday 3:00PM-11:30PM

Red Lake Emergency Nurses are certified and members of the following:

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Trauma Nursing (TNCC)
• Emergency Nurses Association

Red Lake Emergency Care a Level IV Trauma Center

A Level IV Trauma center provides the stabilization and treatment of severely injured patients in remote areas where no alternative care is available.

The most severely critically ill and trauma patients are transferred by ambulance, or air (Helicopter or fixed wing) to a higher level of care hospital. The majority of Red Lake patients are transferred to Sanford Hospital, Fargo Hospital, and Altru Hospital of Grand Forks. Very infrequently, some patients may be transferred to various hospitals located in the Twin Cities.
